Do you run as Administrator?

Post by ssj100 on 26/4/2010, 04:29

How do you normally run your system as? An Admin user or a Limited user? Or perhaps you're running as a "Power User" or even a "Guest"?

I hate having to 'confirm' anything I do and I couldn't care less getting the occasional virus because of that.

(Although I haven't had to take care of any in a pretty long time, luckily my parents are still able to provide me some fun once in a while Razz).

Edit: might not be clear but that's why I run as Administrator Wink I also disabled UAC and hand over all file/folder permissions to my account. My PC, my folders, my files. Restrictions? I love them sound of those, when crushing them Very Happy

Welcome shout! Where have I seen your name before?

Not sure what you mean by "having to confirm anything I do..."?

I personally don't have to "confirm" anything I do in my LUA. I just run in a LUA. There isn't really any bother, particularly with SuRun. I only log into my Admin account (takes about 5 seconds to switch into it haha) about once or twice a month for funsies (mainly for Microsoft updates, which tend to come out once a month). I'm amazed that so many people tolerate and take the time to learn classical HIPS software (and test all sorts of other security software to find the "golden bullet"), and never put in the same effort for using LUA. Using LUA (+SRP) is probably the best thing I've ever done in terms of securing my computer (maybe second only to using Sandboxie!).

By default I understand I am the Admin in my system - but that's not the same as really being Admin by running your Windows 7 Hidden Administrator Account. I understand this account gives you more admin power and is hidden purposely for emergency use only. I am sure someone will correct me if this isn't right.

I use The Ultimate Windows Tweaker - a free app like Tweak UI for windows 7, to enable this hidden account when needed for advanced troubleshooting. You can find this app over at http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista

However, I admit I am not versed on the LUA issue. I now endeavor to look into it's many benefits :-)

Standard User in Vista (=limited) with UAC on 'High' (never seen any pop-ups by the way), although the configuration of my system is so rigid, that I could easily work in the in-built admin account (UAC is disabled there) and not be hit by malware. Smile

I've always run as Administrator without thinking much of it, but after reading SSJ's config, I'm interested in trying out the whole LUA setup.

Me too... And now i am converted Very Happy .
It has a learning curve, but now i can not live without it.
I only spend 5 minutes a week (at most) in the administrator account to the a scan with secunia and the subsequent updates. After that is SUA with UAC at maximum all the way.

I voted 'other'. I call it a confined account. Also known as an Admin acct. But not by choice. I read somewhere about LUA stuff and the author said if you already have xp running with just an admin only and you don't want to start all over again as a LUA there is a shortcut.

Create another Admin first then change your own acct down to LUA. Simple quick and easy said he. I believed him. I locked myself out and in frustration had to reformat. And forgot to add the LUA while re-installing. So I said, must have been my error. And tried again. So now I have a confined account. Also known as an Admin acct. But not by choice. Fear keeps me confined to the admin world no longer willing to step outside the box.

Never strip an Admin account down to an LUA. Never.
