Sandboxie driver at boot-up loading speed

Post by Guest on 28/4/2010, 04:18

It is with interest that have read the below thread on the Sandboxie Forums.
http://sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=6117

As I began to use the full edition of Sandboxie, I turned to forcing my browser,to run sandboxed, and retired my "Sandboxie shortcut creator" shortcuts.

I soon found however if I continued my practice of not allowing Sandboxie to start with Windows,or at least manually open the Sandboxie control center,I had problems starting a forced browser.

There would be perhaps 15 second delay, then the browser would open, without the colored boarder,or the # at the top.
Also the Sandboxie icon did not show up in the icon tray.
Manually starting the control center, showed the browser was in fact sandboxed, and spontaneously caused the boarder to appear as well.

At that point I set Sandboxie to start with Windows, and the problem was resolved

However,I also noticed the ! symbol in the Sandboxie icon
for at least 10 seconds after the icon appeared.
(As well as a 10 second slowdown in boot speed prior to getting to the desktop.)

For now,I have returned to my custom icons for browsers, and once more have stopped Sandboxie from starting with Windows.

The only thing I have starting with Windows is DefenderDaemon.

I have left other applications forced,as by the time they are opened,Sandboxie control is invariably already open because of a browser started prior.

I didn't fully understand from the Sandboxie forum thread,if this has been a long term on-going thing,or something that started recently.

The "!" symbol is basically a sign to show that the Sandboxie Control panel has loaded but that some other Sandboxie components are not quite ready yet. It's no big deal really, not for me anyway, as it doesn't delay my boot up by much at all (maybe a couple of seconds to wait for the symbol to go away).

I note that you mention it takes 10 seconds for the icon to appear, as well as a 10 second slowdown in boot speed prior to getting to the desktop. I certainly have never noticed that, especially the delay in getting to the desktop - as far as I can tell, I have zero delay in getting to the desktop...except if I boot into Shadow Mode...is that what you're doing too? If so, I put down the delay in booting into Shadow Mode to Shadow Defender itself - remember it takes about 5-8 seconds for a system to initiate Shadow Mode, particularly on larger hard-drives and slower processors.

Anyway, it might be worth trying out the latest Beta, as I think Tzuk has implemented a registry tweak to improve the priority of loading Sandboxie drivers.

Your right,I overstated the boot up delay with Starting Sandboxie with Windows.

Without starting Sandboxie with Windows: 55 secs.
Starting Sandboxie with Windows:58 secs-1 min,02 secs

Also,I meant 10 secs for the "!" to leave the Sandboxie icon.
Sandboxie icon itself, when set to start with Windows, appears almost simultaneously with desktop.
Most of what I was doing was out of ShadowMode as I was trying to commit these changes to my system.

Ps# for all Beta Upgrades going back almost 9 months,(may have missed one or 2)I have over-installed the new version.
Might it be a good idea to save my configuration, and do a clean uninstall-install, and
import my saved settings?

I don't think it's necessary to do that. However, I tend to do clean re-installs of Sandboxie from time to time (particularly with major releases), but that's just my habit.

And yes, make sure you always keep a backup of Sandboxie.ini somewhere so that you can easily import your configuration if you ever clean re-install or if you lose your settings for whatever reason.

10 seconds seems quite long regardless - maybe the "!" will go away faster after a few reboots etc.

Yes there is a perceptual speed increase with build 3.45.09.
Do you know if this is the build with the registry tweak,or is it all in my mind?

I have not timed it exactly, nor would I,as it seems pretty fast.

Seems you'll need to clean re-install Sandboxie to get that registry tweak in.

After rebooting a few times,I thank you are right. The "!" is there, but for a much shorter period of time.
I thank I will hold off for now, everything is working pretty well.

Update!!
I wasn't doing anything anyway,so I decided to do a clean uninstall,and reinstall of 3.45.09.
I saved my INI,and everything worked great. The Sandboxie Icon no longer
displays "!",at start up,and Firefox is ready go very quickly.

Thanks for the feedback noorismail. I haven't updated to 3.45.09 just yet, but will be looking forward to it given your positive findings!

Just installed 3.45.09 - I no longer see the "!" symbol on start-up, and Sandboxie certainly appears to load faster. Good stuff!

I have also noticed a big improvement with this beta release, thanks for pointing it out.
I have also noticed the download size is about half of what the 3.44 version was?

No. 3.44 is merely a combination of 32-bit and 64-bit installers, hence why you've noticed it's about "twice the size".

The Beta versions come with separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers, meaning they are "half the size" haha.

Anyway, if you're keen on having separate installers for 3.44, check here:
