Instant Messengers and Sandboxie

Post by exus69 on 22/7/2011, 21:49

NOTE: I've asked the exact same question in Sandboxie forums.

Hello,

I've 2 questions to ask as follows:

1) Is it really necessary to Sandbox Instant Messengers?? I've never heard
of any illegal hacking incident involving the use of any messenger unless
if the user opened a malicious file/link transferred through the messenger.

If the answer to the above question is NO then there's no point of 2nd question.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) I've selected the option "Automatically delete contents of sandbox".
Whenever I run any instant messenger(I use Yahoo and Skype) in Sandboxie it works
fine except after its contents get deleted I also lose all the options and
preferences that i've set during the chat or in general in the IM.

Can we have a sticky of common applications paths that we can give in the
"Direct Access Setting"(OpenFilePath) so that we can retain those settings
even after the Sandbox gets deleted automatically??

I would prefer to get the exact file to be added to the Direct Access
setting rather than the entire folder. For eg. To retain the modified
whitelist while using NoScript extension in Sandboxed Firefox,
prefs.js need to be given Direct Access setting. I found the solution
for NoScript from google but not for Yahoo and Skype hence am
asking here for solution.

Please help

It's not necessary to sandbox anything or (even) to run an Antivirus, and yet people still do. The main reasons I sandbox my messenger program are as follows:
1. If I did open a malicious file/link, it would open sandboxed, since my messenger program is sandboxed. Therefore, if some automated process caused a malicious file/link to open, I'd still be safe.
2. I like to keep my system lean - any "debris" (doesn't have to be malicious) that I don't need is always potentially able to be deleted cleanly.

A better solution in my opinion (since I never use OpenFilePath rules out of "purity" haha) is to configure your messenger program before you run it sandboxed. In this way, you won't need to worry about settings being wiped when you delete the sandbox. I personally don't set my messenger sandbox to automatically delete - in fact, it's often only deleted every few weeks (eg. when there's a new version of it out and I want to start cleanly). With my security setup/approach, the only thing I really need to worry about is malicious data mining (eg. keyloggers), but then my security setup/approach also covers this.
