Avira Antivir Premium allows all outbound..?

Post by Peace on 26/12/2011, 15:54

Mr BillG made this post over at the outpost forum and there's a thread at the avira forum but i cant find it at the moment..

"Avira's WebGuard is incompatible with Outpost and most other firewalls.

Every OUTBOUND TCP/IP connection from your computer, whether it's from IE, Firefox, or any media player, must go through WebGuard before it goes to Outpost. So if Outpost allows WebGuard outbound access, it then allows every single outbound TCP/IP connection, including malware.

Internet Explorer->-+
Firefox-->---------+-->--WebGuard-->---Outpost----> INTERNET
Malware--->-------+

If you create a rule to allow WebGuard outbound access, then anything and everything that wants outbound access is granted outbound access!

This is strange behavior since WebGuard is supposed to only check INBOUND TCP/IP. Avira's Support response to me on this issue is "Outpost is buggy, uninstall Outpost and use the Avira firewall." "

Question 1: doesn't all/most antivirus progs work in the same way?

Question 2: Avira antivir redirects connections to loopback at port 44080, so why do i have 44080 and a 44081 connection (Listen)? Malware? Normal? (Im using a 3g dongle)

Kinda disappointed at the answer i got regarding port 44081 over at the Avira forum.
Any tip on a good AV besides Avira? NOD? KAV? F-Sec? Norton? Comodo? or no AV just Emisoft and MBAM as on demand?

I personally wouldn't pay for an Antivirus. I think if I had to go for one on a Windows platform, I'd just go with MSE.
