SuRun 1.2.1.0 released

Post by ssj100 on 13/1/2012, 11:58

This may have gone unnoticed by many users of SuRun. The final version was released on 30th December 2011. I think most of the changes/fixes relate to Windows Vista/7, but it's hard to say - I think the developer is German and I can only vaguely understand the release notes with the "automatic" Google translation tool.

Thanks for the heads up. Surun is my single most favourite piece of security software. Or is that SandboxIE... can't decide. Luckily we don't have to choose one from the other!

Sorry for hijacking this thread... but, I practically see no mentions to Sudo for Windows.

The only decent paper on it I could find, is from SANS Intitute. -https://www.sans.org/reading_room/whitepapers/bestprac/1726.php

Has anyone tried it before? -http://sourceforge.net/projects/sudowin/

Thanks!

There's a good article on SuRun here:
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/surun.html

Never tried sudowin before, but I remember doing fairly extensive research before I ended up choosing SuRun. It would be interesting to hear thoughts from people like "Mrkvonic" and "tlu" about this.

Yes, I'm aware of the Mrkvonic article. I'm just surprised that Sudo for Windows isn't that much talked about, except perhaps in that SANS Institute pdf file.

Something that called my attention is that, according to what's in this paper, sudowin seems not to be susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks. For instance, SANS Institute makes no references to SuRun, in the context where Sudowin was mentioned.

I remember that user MrBrian reported something about SuRun last year, alerting users that SuRun could be abused by malware/malicious users. The author did fix it, though.

I'm going to have to give both a try. I did try SuRun in the past. It has more than I need from it.

I just want to change a few registry key settings in my standard user account, but I need to elevate in context of the same user. Unfortunately, Windows 7 UAC elevates to the administrator account. I wonder why it lacks such functionality...

The main difference elevating with SuRun as opposed to windows "Run as administrator" menu option is that the process is elevated within the user's account, whereas the Windows option elevates it within the Administrator account. The SuRun method is something MrBrian has expressed concern about in the past because of security breech implications.
